Concrete Pedestrian Bridge
A tied arch crossing in concrete
Eindhoven, Netherlands2025Structural Design

01
Introduction
A 16 metre concrete pedestrian bridge connecting two banks of the Dommel. The commission asked for a crossing that would read as a single architectural gesture rather than an engineered object placed in the landscape.
02
Concept
The structure and the architecture are treated as one design. A tied arch carries the span while the deck and canopy form a continuous public room, so the crossing is experienced as a covered route rather than a piece of infrastructure.
03
Design Development
The arch geometry was tested against the required clearance and the existing quay walls. Iterations moved between a single tied arch and a paired arch before the single span was fixed.
04
Architecture
The deck widens at mid-span to form a small viewing platform. The canopy begins approximately one metre above the deck and follows the arch line, giving the crossing a clear silhouette from both banks.
05
Material & Structural Strategy
The bridge is conceived in concrete throughout. The tied arch resolves the horizontal thrust within the span, keeping the abutments light against the existing quay.
06
Final Design
Final presentation drawings and renders of the completed proposal.
